A trader profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the hours before Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been seized.

A particular user, which became a member recently and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A new rule presented on Monday seeks to ban public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
